Faith and Community

The power of Prayer

In the Orthodox Church, prayer is the lifeline that connects us to God, nurturing our spiritual growth and deepening our faith. We believe that prayer is not just a personal act but a communal experience, encompassing the entire body of Christ, both living and departed. Praying with the saints is a profound expression of this belief.

Saints’ Stories

These narratives, curated from the archives of the American Carpatho-Russian Orthodox Diocese of North America, highlight the faith, dedication, and miracles of the saints of the Orthodox Church.

St. Maria Skobtsova of Paris

Mother Maria (Skobtsova) lived a life full of contradictions that became a witness of love and sacrifice. Once a revolutionary and atheist, she later became a nun in Paris, dedicating herself to the poor, the sick, and the homeless. During the Nazi occupation, she sheltered Jews, issued false baptismal certificates, and even smuggled children to safety—acts that led to her martyrdom at Ravensbrück concentration camp. Her story is one of courage, faith, and compassion that continues to inspire.

St. Gabriel Urgebadze

From Soviet persecution to sainthood, St. Gabriel of Georgia stands as one of the most beloved modern Orthodox saints. Born in 1929, he defied Communism, endured torture and ridicule, and embraced the life of a “Fool for Christ” to humble himself and call others to repentance. Known for his radical humility, love, and prophetic wisdom, his life continues to inspire Christians worldwide as a witness of faith stronger than fear.

Discover these and other saintly lives through the insightful writings of Father Edward Pehanich, available on our diocese website.
